Introduction to Broadcast Engineering

Lady with blue hair chatting to man in grey suit at Radio TechConDoes this sound like you?

  • You love radio/audio/podcasting/broadcasting in general.
  • You might have some experience of volunteering at a student or community radio station with technical responsibilities.
  • Alternatively, you have made some programmes but always seem to be the person who ends up showing other people how to edit or put music onto the playout system.
  • You could be studying electronics, transmission, or IT and are curious about how you could apply your skills to a career in broadcast.
  • Or, perhaps you are ready for a career change; have just found out that ‘Radio Engineer’ is a thing and you’re very excited about it!

The only problem is, nobody has ever shown you how all the different bits of the transmission chain fit together. You’re worried that there are huge gaps in your knowledge and fear that you could never be ‘technical’ enough to get a job as a ‘proper’ broadcast engineer.

Imagine that some of the most experienced people in the radio industry had taught you – from scratch – how studios are built, what kit to put in your radio station, how to get signals around your building, and how to transmit them to the wider world.

Then imagine you have had some careers advice, practised technical skills (including coding) in a hands-on way, and left feeling confident that you know whether or not a career in radio technology and engineering is for you.

That’s where the Radio Technology Masterclass comes in!

Practical, hands-on learning

A man holding a bright blue catchbox microphoneThis one-day training event takes you from being a beginner who’s confused by the world of radio technology to knowing what all the options are, and excited about all the possibilities of working in broadcast engineering.

There will be a mixture of theory and practical sessions, and you will get to take part in all of them – no having to decide on workshops and having FOMO!

The day will include:

  • Theory sessions on building a radio studio, studio kit, central technical areas, transmission, internet and coding, taking you from ‘complete beginner’ to ‘bluff a conversation’ in the space of a morning.
  • Short-burst practical workshops including learning about signal flow using sounds desks, hands-on transmitters, coding-for-radio basics, problem solving and project planning.
  • A careers Q&A with industry experts to showcase the broad range of jobs you could be doing as a broadcast engineer (with a radio specialism).
  • Information about future training and degree course opportunities, so you can decide if this is the career for you.
  • Lunch and refreshments.
  • The chance to make new friends and develop contacts with people from across the UK radio industry.
  • 8 hours of CPD credits, certified by the IET

The overall aim is to allow you to understand how broad ‘broadcast engineering’ can be, take away real practical knowledge, and help you work out if this is a part of the industry you would like to work in (we hope so)!

Philippa and Aradhna chatting during a Radio TechCon breakAll of the sessions will be run by experienced engineers from the main radio groups (BBC, Global, Bauer), transmission experts (Arqiva and Ofcom) as well as individuals who have worked on broadcast projects all over the UK and the rest of the world.

Every single person running the training has real-life experience of working in broadcast engineering and are happy to help answer your questions throughout the day.

The Radio Technology Masterclass is not to be missed – if you love radio, audio and technology, it’s for you. If you feel underrepresented in the broadcasting industry, it’s DEFINITELY for you.

The event has been heavily subsidised by the industry and our event sponsors: Broadcast Bionics and the IET Multicommunications Network.

This means that tickets for individuals paying for themselves (or being bought by Community or Student radio stations) are just £20 + VAT.

Tickets for people who are being paid for by a company or organisation which has more than 5 paid employees are £180 + VAT.

The event takes place at IET London: Savoy Place on Friday, 12th July 2019.

Places are strictly limited, so if you want to come, click here to buy a ticket.

Radio Technology Masterclass FAQ

Who is this day for?

  • The Radio Technology Masterclass is for people who are beginners in the radio industry, or are considering working in radio technology as a career. The event is not designed for people who are already established in a broadcast engineering career.

Where and when is it?

  • IET London: Savoy Place0900 for an 0930 start. The event finishes at 1700, but as we’re engineers, feel free to stay later and buy us a drink in the pub!

How is this different from Radio TechCon?

  • Radio TechCon is the UK radio and audio industry’s technical and engineering event. Radio TechCon is a conference aimed at people who work in broadcast engineering and technology (although all are welcome). The Radio Technology Masterclass is a hands-on day aimed at beginners to broadcast engineering.

How old do I have to be to attend?

  • You need to be 16 or over to come to the Radio Technology Masterclass. People aged 16-17 will need parental consent. There’s no upper age limit!

I’ve booked a ticket! Do I need to bring anything?

  • There will be a practical session on coding so it would be really helpful if you could bring your laptop or a tablet with you. Let us know if this will be a problem for you and we’ll see if we can loan you a spare or if you can share with someone.

I can’t afford to travel to London.  Can you help?

  • All are welcome to the Radio Technology Masterclass, regardless of whether you have a sofa to crash on in London or how much money you have in your wallet to pay for your train. If finances are a problem, drop us a line and see if we can help with some expenses towards travel or accommodation costs. We’re not interested in the state of your bank account, we just want to know why you want to come and how we can help get you here. Email us at team@radiotechcon.com and let’s see what we can figure out.

What happens to my data?

  • We need to store some details for the running of the event, for example your name and contact details as well as special requirements for the day. We may also ask for other information about your background to understand who our delegates are, to make sure we keep running useful and relevant events. For full information about what data we store and how we look after it, have a look at our privacy policy.

I have a question not covered by this list

No worries – e-mail team@radiotechcon.com and we’ll get you sorted.
