What is TechCon?
Radio TechCon (TechCon to its friends) is the UK radio industry’s annual technical conference.
It’s aimed at broadcast engineers and anybody with an interest in radio, audio, technology and engineering – managers and techy-savvy producers are welcome!
TechCon is a friendly event, designed to help you make connections across the industry. Whether your station is part of a large commercial group, is a volunteer-run organisation or you are in the public sector, we hope you will find something of interest. Delegates also include transmission experts and studio equipment manufacturers. With people from so many different broadcasting backgrounds, come prepared for a lot of excitement and buzz through the day.
Radio TechCon is independently organised and will next take place on Monday 27th November 2023.
What will I learn?
This year’s sessions are continuing to be announced. To give a wider flavour of the day, here are some topics previously covered:
- How to create an entire radio station – from production to transmission – on one laptop.
- A masterclass in Audio Over IP (AoIP) – go from beginner to expert in an hour.
- Behind-the-scenes of transmitting Radio 1’s Big Weekend.
- What LUFs are, how the EBU R128 standard was defined, and what you need to know/do about it.
- Engineering in a warzone – what it’s like to be a broadcast engineer in South Sudan.
- Hybrid Radio – what is it? how it works and how you can get started today.
- Object-based audio – the production method of the future?
- Covering the funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II.
- How NASA does sound.
You can expect to learn a mixture of updates on new technology and standards, ‘real-life’ details from projects, big and small, and a big dose of inspiration from around the UK and the world.
Although there is a lot of information to take in, we aim to make TechCon fun – there has been buzzword bingo, summaries from professional comedians and the infamous second-screen – giving serious (and-not-so-serious) summaries of the terms and acronyms that might have passed you by.
Oh, and we also always go to the pub afterwards!
Who is it for?
Radio TechCon is for everyone with an interest in radio’s future, and how the technology we use will take us there. It doesn’t matter if you have been an engineer for decades, or if you are simply intrigued by technology and want to know more – you will find something at Radio TechCon to spark your interest, and you will be made to feel very welcome.
